Make Your Own Mineral Oil and Beeswax Finish For Charcuterie Board

Why Make Some Board Butter

This is going to be a short and sweet blog. I have been using a Board Butter that I had purchased at a local wood store for some time. The tiny jar covered a lot and I love the finish. I did not just use it for charcuterie boards but also for my live edge wood shelves and to restore an old bread box that we hung in the kitchen.

I was almost out and wanted more, but unable to find the original seller. According to the bottle it was only made from beeswax and food grade mineral oil so I decided to just make my own.

How To Make It

Everything that I read showed the ratio as 1 part beeswax to 4 parts mineral oil. I weighed 50 grams beeswax pellets and added 200 grams of mineral oil into a tinfoil pan that fit inside my large cast iron. Different sites discussed using crock pots or double boilers. I did not want to clean beeswax out of my everyday pans. This mixture was heated on low, stirring occasionally with  a wooden popsicle stick until all the pellets were well melted. Then I poured it into a couple 266 ml glass jars I had picked up at the dollar store. I sterilized the jars in a baby bottle sterilizer and left them to dry well prior to filling. The jars were about 2/3 full. When it cooled I put the lids on and they are ready to go.
